The Show

Set to pounding African beats, thirty high-energy performers re-tell the action-packed tale of Mzilikazi a boy who dreams of playing professional football in the big city, he doesn’t get it easy. It’s a tense, taught story, fraught with danger, drama and adventure. It’s the beautiful game as it’s never been seen before. It’s Zambezi Express: the incredible all-singing soccer show that’s in a league of its own. The show has received rave reviews from the world press like Aljazeera, SABC, Channel 4, Sunday Times and The Daily Telegraph to name but a few.

Born from various ideas and an audition that attracted over 100 artists at Stanley Square, Makokoba, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe in January 2009, Zambezi Express is a theatre show that fuses dance, music, acting and circus skills, the 25 strong cast consists of members of Siyaya Arts, Iyasa and Amavithikazi. The audition saw the promotion of 9 (nine) Siyaya Arts juniors into the touring Zambezi Express. Extensive rehearsals followed that saw new songs and dances that amazed audiences when ever they where performed as teasers at Siyaya functions. Further rehearsals at Wookey Hole, England, in circus skill followed, finally coming out with 90 minutes of edge of the seat action from start to the end. Directed by Wayne Fawkes & Saimon Mbazo Phiri with choreography from Thuba Gumede & Darren Charles, this is Zambezi Express.

The Tour

The show opened in Bournemouth in July and has played at the Riverside Studios in London, Wookey Hole in Wells, The Downs in Bristol, Princess Theatre in Torquay, Womad Charlton Park and closes at the Hackney Empire in London for 2009, seeing off over a hundred performances in 75 days.
